Weekend Adventure

Mother's Day weekend we followed Todd to another rural ER. This weekend it was Fillmore. For those of you that don't know, Fillmore is in the middle of the state of Utah. We did a lot of fun activities and Zac claimed that is was "one of the best weekends ever"! It's always family time that makes Zac the happiest. The kids started the weekend by swimming in the Bering Sea (ok...it was just the hotel indoor swimming pool, but the heater was broken). They didn't seem to mind the teeth chattering fun. We were a little worried about how much time we'd have with Todd when we found out the there were motorcross races going on all weekend in Fillmore. Saturday started with the first injury at 9:15, the races started at 9:00. After that though, the day was relatively quiet. We had a pinic lunch at the park and then toured the Territorial State House. Fillmore was intended to be the state capital. Only a small wing of the capitol building was ever built and now houses a museum.

We found the perfect jail cell, but decided to let the kids out. There was more cold swimming in the afternoon and then that evening one of the nurses at the hospital, Troy, invited to his house to see the new horse and took the kids on a mule ride. The mule, Lucy, was enormous and Max was pretty scared at first. But they all got a turn and loved the ride. Troy's house was built in 1871 and is a kids' paradise with tire swings, horses, mature fruit trees... (perfect for climbing) and plenty of running room. I didn't think we'd ever get the kids to leave.
Sunday the motorcross track must have been packed because Todd was very busy fixing injured limbs. The kids & Todd delivered my hotel breakfast to me so I still got my traditional breakfast in bed. Later, I loaded up the kids and headed about 1/2 hour south to Cove Fort. Cove Fort was built by Pres. Hinkley's ancestors under the direction of Brigham Young in 1867. Not only was it a safe haven for travelers, it served as a stagecoach station, a telegraph office and a pony express stop. We were escorted around the fort by Elder and Sister Gammon. They were great hosts and the kids pelted them with questions. We also toured the outbuildings, including the barn, blacksmith shop and bunkhouse. The fort has been restored and the bedrooms and kitchen and offices were filled with period items. We quizzed the kids on the way home and I was very impressed with how much they learned. It was a fun weekend and a great Mother's Day!
