Wheat and Beet Days

I love rural Utah! Over the 24th it was Longhorn Days and last weekend it was Wheat and Beet Days here in Garland. Now I know some of you are wondering why Wheat and Beet. Well, I think the Wheat part is obvious. The area is surrounded by gorgeous wheat fields. Now for the Beets. Just down the street from us are the ruins of a sugar beet factory. For decades it was the heart beat of Garland where beets were processed into sugar. Anyway...last weekend Garland celebrated their heritage with their 70th celebration and it was our first. We had a great time at the parade Saturday morning and I was really surprised with how big the parade was. Then we enjoyed some of the activities at the park in the afternoon.
The kids participated in the Garland Library's summer reading program. As a reward for finishing their goals they got the chance to ride on the library's float. The boys were anxious to enjoy the ride and throw candy. (That's Max and Zac sitting on the flatbed.) The girls, however, decided they'd rather catch the candy.

At dark we had front row seats in our yard for the fireworks....(we live right across the street from the park). It was a fun day and will hopefully be a new tradition for our family.
