Busy Summer Days

Over the last couple of weeks it felt like I didn't even have time for a potty break, let alone blog...so here we are again...catching up. A few weeks ago we met up with our friends, the Bowdens, for a camping trip. It'd been about 3 years since we had seen them, so it was a lot of fun to visit and catch up.
Yum...the main reason we go camping...smores!Rylee Bowden taught us a new camping treat...roasted starbursts! Something she learned at girls camp this year. I was doubtful, but they were very yummy especially when you get a nice crispy outer layer going. On our last day, we detoured over to an afternoon at Downata Hot Springs to swim. It had rained on and off the whole day before, so we weren't sure if we'd get the chance. However summer weather returned and we had a great, warm day for swimming.
Just after this camping trip, we also picked up the newest addition to the "farm" . Another kitty to replace the one we lost. Meet "Nugget". After a rough beginning he seems to be getting along with Toby quite well.
We spent the 2nd and 3rd weeks of August trying to squeeze in 2-3 hours per night...yes folks...that's PER NIGHT...doing this and ........

this so that we could be ready for the fair.Max found other things to do while we worked with calves. And we did manage to do some back to school shopping along with PTA meetings for me. Because days were tight, I ended up taking all four kids shopping on the same day...something I try to avoid. Whew...they survived and I did not commit child abuse. It was a good trip. And then there was the FAIR! (A very, huge, big deal in this county).

A week before Kiarra had to model her skirt that she entered in the "Decorate Your Duds" contest. She had made roses and bows to add to this skirt.

The opening of the Box Elder County Fair starts with a huge parade. We were once again driving the Bear River Valley Royalty Float, so this was our view. We were number 60 out of 80 which meant we sat in the heat for about an hour after the start of the parade before we got to move.

We had strategically placed our two vehicles at different positions along the route because Todd had a patient in labor. I was a little worried I'd get stuck driving this long float through town.

After the parade, it seems the whole county heads up to the fairgrounds. I took the kids up as well and an hour later, after the baby was delivered, Todd joined us for Family Night on the rides. The lines are long, but the rides are much cheaper on opening night. The older kids were thrilled that they had permission to almost run wild with their friends. (We were there and they had to keep checking in.)

Kiarra with her first place ribon on her skirt.

Zac with his first place ribbon on his poetry book.First place on Kiarra's embroidered pin cushion/storage jar.

Thursday was the day we'd been waiting for. Time to show the calves. They were thoroughly scrubbed in the afternoon and hair styled.

Remember I said "thorough"!

The four kids on the left are our group...Kiarra, Wyatt, Morgan and Zac. They're getting them set up for the judge.

Bummer... I only got the back of Sophie's head. She's got the white flower in her pony tail. The dang Holstein behind her kept nudging hers making it hard for her to get her calf set up. She was a little frustrated but kept a smile on her face the whole time and did very well. All the calves lead well and set up well. The kids had control the whole time. We were very proud of them.

They all got first place ribbons (Kiarra didn't hang up her ribbon.) By the way...the sign was thanks to my second love...my Cricut Expression. Thanks Liz for all your glueing help.

We then had the job of taking care of the animals the rest of the week at the fair. Luckily we could split that with the Johnsons.Friday night was the rodeo. That blurr is Sophia! I did the best I could with the time I had. She had the fun opportunity to Mutton Bust. For those that don't know, she had to hang on to this sheep as long as she could. The kid to hold on the longest, wins. She didn't win, but she gave it her best shot in front of a huge crowd. Way to go!

And finally, no fair is complete without cotton candy. Kisses anyone?
